Cooking Safety
College is an exciting time for learning, growing and trying new things, like cooking. While learning these new skills, it’s important to incorporate lifelong safe habits.
The first rule of cooking is to not get distracted. Let cooking be the focus. Remain in the room; monitor the process and set timers. When microwaving, follow package instructions: vent cellophane; let items cool; and open hot packages away from the body to vent steam.
For dorm life, make sure your microwave is always plugged directly into the wall outlet and not into a power strip. Always use the proper dish when microwaving food; some takeout and storage containers can melt and leave behind toxins. Most importantly, never place metal items in the microwave.
Keep the cooking area clean. Use precautions when cooking by setting timers and remaining in the cooking area. Don’t place combustibles like towels, napkins, or plastic near heating elements. Have a lid close by for smothering.
As a last resort, know where the fire extinguisher and pull station is located.
Good luck and happy cooking.
