Electrical Safety and Power Strips
Surge protectors are extremely common and conveniently provide power for phones, watches, PCs and other electronic or household items. The purpose of a surge protector is to save devices from being damaged in case of electrical surges or spikes. Anytime there is a power surge or spike in voltage, the surge protector is designed to trip, protecting devices and lessening the fire hazards associated with overloaded circuits.
Make sure that the power strips have over-protection built in and always plug them directly into a power source. Plugging power strips into extension cords or other surge protectors is called daisy chaining or piggy backing and is a leading cause of overloading currents that often lead to fires. Also, make sure that surge protectors are not in danger of overheating. Don’t charge your phone under your pillow or near curtains. Any combustible item can be a possible fire hazard when placed near an electronic device that will produce heat.
When it comes to surge protectors, NEVER do the following:
- Never use a surge protector to power a major appliance. This includes vacuums, refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes dryers, washing machines, coffee makers, crock pots, insta pots, air fryers, etc. These items are more likely to overload the surge protector and could cause it to fail by overloading its intended purpose.
- Never alter the plug on a surge protector or any plug-in device. The third prong is used for grounding. There are adapters to solve this problem when encountered.
- Never place any cord under carpets, rugs or floor mats.
- Never use a surge protector with a frayed cord or exposed wires as these issues could lead to overheating and a greater risk of fire.
