When fire alarm sounds...

Will you know what to do when the fire alarm sounds? You should know at least two escape routes from your dorm or classroom before it becomes a necessity. Look for items that could be in your way along escape routes, so in an emergency, you will know where these items are and how to get around them. Ensure that doors are not blocked or disguised with curtains or other decorations. Hallways are not to be used for storage of excess items. Doing so will narrow the path of escape and possibly stop you and others from getting out of the building safely.

Be sure to plan ahead. Put items such as a flashlight, keys, and shoes in one location near you or the exit, so you can grab them on your way out. Decide on an assembly point outside of the building with roommates or colleagues. In case of a fire or emergency, this will allow you to know if everyone is accounted for. Once you are out of the building, stay out until you are told that it is safe to re-enter.

When the fire alarm sounds, close doors behind you as you evacuate to contain the smoke and fire. Remain calm and use the stairs. The elevators should not be used and could be shut off depending upon the location of the fire. If you encounter smoke, stay low to the ground. Always check doors for heat with the back of your hand before opening them.

For those unable to use the stairs, stay in the exit stairwell or designated refuge area until help arrives. Let 911 personnel know where you are located and keep doors closed to prevent smoke migration.

Always treat fire alarms as an emergency. Do not assume it is a drill. Delaying your escape could cost you your life.
