Cooking Safety
Cooking is the leading cause of fire in homes and campus dormitories. There are many simple steps you can take to minimize the risk of cooking fires. Be sure to keep your eye on what you fry.
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of most home cooking fires, so when you are boiling, frying, grilling or broiling, stay in the kitchen and watch what is cooking. When pan-frying food, you should have a tight-fitting lid for your cooking vessel. If you have a grease fire, place the lid over the pan to extinguish the fire. Turn off the burner and leave it on the stove. Do not try and move the pan.
You should have a working fire extinguisher available in the kitchen; this will provide a means of extinguishing any household cooking fires. You cannot overlook the importance of working smoke detectors throughout the home. Smoke detectors will provide an early warning of a fire and will alert others to evacuate to safety. EHS provides fire safety training with hands on extinguisher training the second Friday of each month.
